2022 Celebration of Sport
This week, St Catherine’s Sports Auxiliary and Sports Department held our annual Celebration of Sport Breakfast.
The event was a great opportunity to acknowledge the sporting achievements of St Catherine’s students throughout 2022, with a focus on our teams and athletes who competed in the Girls Sport Victoria competition.
Based on the three terms of Sport that have been completed to date, 2022 will go down as our most successful in history. An incredible 12 teams have progressed to the GSV Finals, with 10 of these in A grade competitions. Additionally, our Snowsports and Rowing Teams have achieved success at the state, national and international level, providing much to celebrate and be proud of.
As well as acknowledging our sporting achievements, we heard from guest speaker, Australian Olympic Race Walker and recent Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Jemima Montag. Jemima shared the details of her sporting journey and discussed the transformative power that women in sport can have on the path towards gender equality. She emphasised the important roles that a positive environment and supportive network play in removing the barriers for women and girls participating in sport and physical activity.
Our Award recipients are listed below. The Excellence Award is given to an outstanding performer and considers physical ability, performance consistency and resilience to perform under pressure. The Coaches Award is received by an outstanding team contributor and considers attitude, enthusiasm, and leadership towards establishing a positive environment within a team.
The inaugural winner of the Sport Team of the Year Award was also presented. Nominations were open to all members of the School community, with the winning team selected by members of the Sports Department. The winners of the Sport Team Award for 2022 was our First VIII Rowing crew, the MMXXI.
Congratulations to our Award recipients and all students who have contributed to the great culture of sport at St Catherine’s this year. A big thank you to the Sports Auxiliary for coordinating the event, as well as their ongoing support of our student athletes throughout the year.
